XML for Website Management

This two-day, hands-on workshop will provide a strong understanding of XML and how to apply it in your web environment. Day One will focus on the basics needed to understand and apply XML using examples and exercises based on proven research and real world applications. Day Two will expand on these examples to develop skills in applying XML to specific web issues such as managing content and multiple output formats. Participants will be given exercises to do in the workplace, and will return in one week for Day Two with questions and issues around adapting XML in their unique work environment. A flash drive with all sample files and a training guide will be provided as part of this workshop. Familiarity with web development, HTML/XHTML, and the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), as well as basic programming or scripting knowledge is required.

Interactive Presentations Using Technology

This workshop covers the use of new technology including interactive graphics, sounds, and videos to make presentations more interesting and easier to prepare. The workshop reviews the use of interactive technologies to enhance, and move beyond the PowerPoint slideshow to create a dynamic learning environment for presentations. Various types of hardware that could be utilized for these purposes will be discussed at the conclusion of this workshop.

Understanding Local Governments

This workshop provides an entry-level overview of the structure, powers, and functioning of local governments and their interaction with the state. Topics include the constitutional nature of local governments, incorporation and annexation. Participants will also review the importance of regional planning and the powers of local government.

Collaborating with Local Governments

This workshop provides an entry-level overview of the different forms of interaction with local governments, such as service delivery networks, program development collaboration, and inter-municipal cooperation, as well as local government roles and constraints. The skills and tools needed  to function effectively with local government partners will also be introduced. The workshop is provided as a case-based offering using NYS intergovernmental cases.  Prerequisite: Completion of the PSWP workshop “Understanding Local Governments” or a solid understanding of  the structure, powers, and functioning of local governments. In this interactive workshop, participants have an opportunity to improve their skills in dealing with and managing conflict. The workshop provides practical tools and techniques for conflict management and dispute resolution. Topics include conflict theory, individual styles for resolving conflict, differentiating between positions and interests, and determining how differences impact communication. The focus is upon making the participants more effective problem solvers.

This two-day workshop develops skills for visualizing and analyzing data. Topics include descriptive statistics, histograms, cross tabulations and pivot tables, correlation and regression, and confidence intervals. Use of graphs to explore patterns and relationships in the data is emphasized. Data sets are provided for practice in building statistical analysis skills. The workshop uses Microsoft Excel 2007 as a tool for learning about data analysis and is held in a digital classroom where each participant has a computer for doing the exercises. Students should bring a USB (flash) drive to class to store the files that they will be using.  Prerequisite: Familiarity with Excel, including knowing how to enter simple formulas and use built-in functions. An introductory statistics course is recommended.

Investigative Interviewing: Advanced

This workshop examines advanced topics in investigative interviewing. Participants will practice interviewing techniques for different purposes and in different settings. Topics include understanding the interviewer’s ethical responsibilities, detecting deception, and writing effective interview reports. Issues that arise with specific interviewees such as the elderly and children will be discussed. This workshop is intended for examiners, investigators, inspectors, auditors, attorneys, and other employees who interview external subjects. Prerequisite: Prior completion of the PSWP workshop “Investigative Interviewing” or a solid understanding of investigative interviewing concepts and techniques is recommended for all workshop participants.

Root Cause Analysis

This workshop provides an in-depth look at Root Cause Analysis. It provides a comprehensive review of the analytical and investigative processes used to determine causative factors, and the development and application of interventions/approaches that will eliminate and/or manage the factors necessary to prevent occurrences and reoccurrences.
