Accounting Refresher

This workshop is designed for professionals who work in accounting, auditing and other finance-related titles. The workshop provides an overview of the accounting equation and discusses the elements of the income statement. Changes in equity and balance sheets; an explanation of accrual accounting; accounting for deferrals; a synopsis of +/- accounts and the general journal; and a review of depreciation methods will be addressed. Governmental fund accounting and business type accrual accounting including applications of government-wide financial statements will be also be reviewed.

 

 

Actuarial Instruments for Risk Assessment of Sexual Offenders for OMRDD

This two-day workshop is designed for psychologists, social workers, treatment team leaders, nurses, and program development specialists who work with sex offenders in facilities and the community. The workshop includes a research overview, specific instructions for administering and scoring the Static-99 and Stable/Acute 2007, and several hands-on exercises. The workshop will utilize role-play, and small-group and individual exercises to allow participants become proficient in using the risk measures. The workshop will also provide participants with feedback and suggestions for obtaining information in adversarial contexts. This workshop is provided for the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities staff on request of the agency liaison.

 

 

Advanced Auditing Processes

This workshop examines advanced auditing processes including understanding and testing internal controls, fraud, and substantive testing. Audit reporting including the components of an audit report will also be discussed in this workshop. Prerequisite: Prior completion of the PSWP workshop "Auditing Fundamentals" or a solid understanding of basic auditing concepts, techniques, and applications, the audit risk model, and computer auditing is recommended for all workshop participants.

 

 

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance for Department of Transportation

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that transportation facilities constructed or altered by state, regional, and local agencies be readily accessible and usable by people with disabilities. This one-day workshop is provided for New York State employees whose jobs involve adapting agency facilities or services to improve accessibility to persons with disabilities, as required by the ADA in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of pedestrian and other transportation facilities within public right-of-way. The workshop comprises extensive technical information regarding accessibility design and standards. This workshop also includes regulatory information, such as ADA requirements, self evaluations, and transition plans. Using many case examples, workshop participants gain information from New York cities' and agencies' experiences. Upon completion of this workshop, each participant will receive .6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). This workshop is provided for Department of Transportation staff on request of the Agency Liaison.

This workshop provides auditors with the skills to produce clear and objective audit reports. Participants will learn how to organize information (facts, conclusions, inferences, and judgments) from audits into reports that are understandable and objective to the reader. This workshop will assist auditors in developing properly written and supported audit findings, and will provide a template of an audit report.

This workshop provides an overview of auditing, including basic concepts, techniques, and auditing applications. Topics include the audit risk model, professional ethics, and computer auditing. Basic financial derivative transactions will also be introduced. Participants are encouraged to register for the PSWP workshop "Advanced Auditing Processes" to get a complete review of auditing related topics.

This two-day workshop provides an overview of auditing, including basic concepts, techniques, and auditing applications. Topics include the audit risk model, understanding and testing internal controls, substantive testing, fraud, reports on audited financial statements, professional ethics, and an introduction to computer auditing. Topics related to basic financial derivative transactions will also be introduced in the workshop.

 

 

Balance Challenges: Progressive Dynamic Treatment Strategies for OMRDD

This workshop is an intermediate level course designed to improve the clinician's ability to identify specific impairments leading to balance dysfunction in order to provide challenging interventions. Balance disorders leading to falls and injuries affect people of all ages, but are more prevalent in the multiply disabled and aging population. This workshop will present didactic material and hands-on lab experiences to hone clinical skills in evaluation and treatment. Upon successful completion of this workshop, 6 contact hours, or 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be awarded.

Best Practices in the Treatment of Developmentally Disabled Sex Offenders for OMRDD (Videoconference)

This workshop is delivered through videoconferencing and will provide an overview of what needs to be considered when developing treatment programming. Treatment program objectives, admission criteria, identifying service providers, and identification of treatment targets will be discussed. A treatment model to guide treatment will also be presented. Current best practice treatment strategies for this population will be outlined. Common treatment approaches that may have little treatment effectiveness will be also be discussed.

 

 

Cascading Style Sheets: Basics

This workshop focuses on the basic principles of creating Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to develop web page designs that provide a true separation of content from presentation. Participants learn to create different types of style sheets to control page elements such as fonts, lists, color backgrounds, and borders. In addition, using CSS for layout is explored.

 

 

CCRN Test Preparation Workshop for SUNY Upstate Medical Center

This two-day workshop is for experienced critical care nurses who are selected to participant in the SUNY Upstate Medical Center CCRN certification program. The workshop will help participants prepare for the CCRN exam by offering a comprehensive review of critical care nursing practice. This review will include critical care practices when caring for a patient with cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, gastro-intestinal, neurologic, renal, or hematologic problems. Test taking strategies and a review of the synergy model will also be discussed. Participants who attend this workshop must agree to sit for the CCRN exam within three months of workshop completion.Upon successful completion of this workshop, 14 contact hours or 1.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be awarded.

 

 

Collaborating with Local Governments

This workshop provides an entry-level overview of the different forms of interaction with local governments, such as service delivery networks, program development collaboration, and inter-municipal cooperation, as well as local government roles and constraints. The skills and tools needed to function effectively with local government partners will also be introduced. The workshop is provided as a case-based offering using NYS intergovernmental cases. Prerequisite: Completion of the PSWP workshop "Understanding Local Governments" or a solid understanding of the structure, powers, and functioning of local governments. Collaboration of Care and Dual Disorders for OMH/OMRDD

This workshop is designed for OMH and OMRDD clinical staff who provide support and service to individuals presenting with dual disorders in the intellectual developmental disability (IDD) and mental illness areas. The workshop will cover how to identify similarities and differences between intellectual disabilities and mental illness, ways to improve service delivery, the essential components of a coordinated care system, and types of modifications to psychiatric disorders in persons with IDD using the DM-ID. Discussion of information sources available, therapeutic modifications and the benefits of group therapy will also be included.

 

 

Collaboration of Care and Dual Disorders for OMH/OMRDD Psychiatrists

The half-day workshop is designed for psychiatrists and medical doctors in the fields of psychiatric disorders and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). Topics include: how to identify behaviors that directly relate to psychiatric disorders in persons with IDD; methods in formulating a diagnosis; appropriate medications; and the role of the psychiatrist as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

This workshop is designed to prepare participants to serve as community HIV/AIDS educators. Workshop topics include facts about HIV/AIDS, the effects of Sexually Transmitted Diseases on the transmission of HIV, and treatment basics. The workshop will review changes in the policy and regulations that affect the HIV/AIDS community, advances in care and treatment for HIV/AIDS, and new information about prevention strategies and programs.

 

 

Computer Security Basics

This workshop provides an introduction to fundamental computer security concepts, focusing on the Windows operating system and personal computers. Topics include basic computer security tools and practices, including the management of user rights and privileges. Participants will understand the current threat matrix targeting workstations, issues in managing security for desktop computers, and effective countermeasures for protecting agency workstations.

Contract Auditing

This five-day workshop focuses on the types of contract audits and specific purposes of price proposal and historical cost audits. Topics include the procurement process, Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), allocation of costs, statistical sampling, correlation analysis, improvement curves, performing a price proposal audit, and performing the historical audit. This workshop assumes attendees have some college accounting courses and that the current job position is related to auditing of contracts. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will receive 40 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits.

 

 

Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

This workshop is designed for social workers, health professionals, counselors, nurses, teachers, and other professionals. Discussion will focus on the tools for assessing the needs of drug and alcohol-dependent clients. Strategies will be provided for overcoming obstacles for treatment of those with mental health and substance use issues.

 

 

Copyright and Fair Use

This workshop will first provide a general overview of U.S. copyright law: the nature of copyright, what kinds of works are protected, what are the rights of a copyright owner, and what conduct will be considered infringing. It will then describe and explore the U.S. concept of "fair use" of copyrighted materials, the kinds of uses that, while apparently infringing, will nevertheless be protected. We will examine the development of the fair use doctrine and the way in which it has been applied in a variety of contexts.

 

 

Cost Benefit Analysis

This two-day workshop is an introduction to the framework and methods of cost benefit analysis (CBA). Topics include the economic reasoning underlying CBA, discounting to calculate present value, program effects that should and should not be counted, and some of the techniques for valuing benefits and costs. The course provides information to participants that enable them to be competent users of CBA. Note that some knowledge of the economic concepts of supply and demand is a prerequisite.

 

 

Cost Engineering for DOT: An Overview

This two-day workshop provides the basic principles and methods of estimating the costs involved in the design and implementation of construction projects. Real-world examples will illustrate fundamental analysis concepts that include the nature and quantity of work, type and size of equipment used, production rates of labor and equipment, and other unique job-site conditions. The workshop will briefly review aspects of engineering economics and legal considerations relevant to preparing bid documents. This workshop is provided for Department of Transportation staff at the request of the Agency Liaison.

 

 

Counseling Different Ethnic Groups and Understanding Diversity

This workshop provides clinicians and practitioners with an understanding of counseling approaches that can be used for effectively communicating, listening, and developing an awareness of clients from different cultures and diverse backgrounds. Utilizing cross-cultural perspectives, participants will explore diversity within a community and specific populations. Methods for determining realistic counseling goals will also be discussed.

Current Issues in Nutrition

Rapid changes in diets and lifestyles resulting from industrialization, urbanization, economic development and market globalization are having a significant impact on the nutritional status of populations. Because of these changes, diet-related diseases–including obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and various forms of cancer – are increasingly significant causes of disability and premature death. This workshop will discuss current issues in nutrition and the impact on various populations.

Topics include descriptive statistics, histograms, cross tabulations and pivot tables, correlation and regression, and confidence intervals. Use of graphs to explore patterns and relationships in the data is emphasized. Data sets are provided for practice in building statistical analysis skills. The workshop uses Microsoft Excel 2007 as a tool for learning about data analysis and is held in a digital classroom where each participant has a computer for doing the exercises. Students should bring a USB (flash) drive to class to store the files that they will be using. Prerequisite: Familiarity with Excel, including knowing how to enter simple formulas and use built-in functions. An introductory statistics course is recommended.

This workshop provides a basic overview of data mining, or how to find patterns in data. The workshop describes basic concepts, methods, and tools of data mining, and is appropriate for professionals who want to become familiar with this emerging field of data analysis.

 

 

DBT for Children and Families: Clinical Skills Basics for OMH

This two-day workshop is designed for all OMH staff working with teens and families in a wide range of treatment contexts. Participants will learn the basic principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as well as relevant adaptations for working with this population. Practitioners will learn specific principles and strategies relevant to individual therapy, family sessions, telephone consultation, and skills training with adolescents and families, including a new skills module called the walking the middle path. This training will be conducted in a "hands-on" manner, emphasizing clear and practical instruction illustrated in video, role-play demonstrations, small group interactions and adolescent-friendly mindfulness exercises.

 

 

Dealing with Difficult People

This workshop provides participants with skills to identify types of difficult people, and to understand why people often behave negatively. Through recognition of their own communication style and ways they cope with conflict, participants will learn how to maintain control when faced with difficult people and situations. Role playing and other hands-on techniques designed to develop skills for dealing with difficult people will be practiced.

 

 

Decision Making & Critical Thinking for OSC

This workshop focuses on developing clear and logical thought processes which enable effective decision making. Participants learn how to critically evaluate and process information and make the best decision from it. Topics to be discussed include formulating reasoned ideas, interpreting information, and recognizing and overcoming barriers to critical thinking. Participants will practice applying critical thinking and decision-making processes to work-related discussions and assignments including customer service settings.

 

 

Dementia Care Practices for DOH

This three-day workshop is designed for long-term care nurses who work with individuals living with dementia. Workshop participants will learn about the effects of dementia and practice dementia care techniques. The workshop will include ways to engage residents through meaningful communication, how to recognize and assess pain, nutrition and hydration improvement, strategies to reduce risk of falls and preserve mobility, how to prevent unsafe wandering, techniques to reduce the use of restraints, and end-of-life care. This highly interactive and hands-on workshop utilizes role-playing exercises, discussions, video clips and case studies to enhance participant learning.

 

 

Dementia Disorders: An Overview

This workshop discusses conditions and neurological disorders other than Alzheimer's disease that cause symptoms of dementia. Participants learn about three additional forms of dementia: vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and Frontotemporal dementia. The signs, symptoms, and treatment options are also reviewed.

 

 

Derivative Transactions

This workshop provides an overview of derivatives accounting and is designed for professionals who work in accounting, auditing, and other finance-related titles. A derivative is a financial transaction such as an interest rate swap that has been structured from other transactions. This area often involves complex transactions and the accounting is also complex. Information from resources such as the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and the New York State Government Finance Officers' Association, Inc. (NYS GFOA) is reviewed.

 

 

Developmentally Disabled Sex Offenders: Assessing Treatment Progress and Community Management for OMRDD (Videoconference)

This workshop is delivered through videoconferencing and will highlight the recent research on assessing risk and needs among this population. The workshop will also focus on helping service providers learn how to score and use the TIPS-ID (Treatment Intervention and Progress Scale for Sexual Abusers with Intellectual Disabilities), a provider-administered, structured method for identifying treatment needs and measuring treatment progress among adult male sex offenders in both community and residential settings. Community management strategies will also be discussed.

 

 

Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Children and Adolescents: Hone Your Clinical Skills (for OMH)

This two-day workshop is provided for designated OMH staff who have participated in a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Intensive Training and have significant experience in implementing DBT. This training is designed for psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and social workers working with children, adolescents and families in a wide range of mental health treatment contexts. Participants will review the theory, principles, functions, and modes of DBT and how they apply when working with children and their families in OMH-managed programs. Practitioners will learn specific principles and strategies relevant to individual therapy, family sessions, and skills training with adolescents and families that they can use in their clinical settings. Upon completion of this workshop, 12.5 contact hours (1.25 CEUs) of continuing education will be awarded. Participating psychiatrists will receive up to 12.5 hours of category 1 CME credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award.

 

 

Disruptive Students: Effective Intervention Strategies

This half-day workshop outlines effective strategies for dealing with disruptive students in a classroom environment. The workshop addresses student mental health issues, learning disabilities, and handling student behaviors. Participants will explore methods of managing disruptive student behaviors while developing a sense of rapport with the student.

 

 

Dysphagia for OMRDD (Videoconference)

This half-day workshop is delivered through videoconferencing and is designed for staff working in acute or long-term care settings with individuals with developmental disabilities or other neurological impairments and are experiencing some form of dysphagia, a swallowing/eating disorder. Signs, symptoms, possible causes, and therapeutic techniques will be reviewed. Upon completion of this workshop, each participant will receive .3 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

 

 

Dysphagia: Developing Treatment Plans Based on Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies for OMRDD

This workshop is designed for speech language pathologists, dietitians, senior and head occupational therapists and nurses caring for clients with dysphagia. The workshop will provide an in-depth presentation of evidence-based treatment methods for dysphagia management. This workshop will include group discussion and interpretation of videofluoroscopic swallowing studies to determine appropriate management and treatment. This workshop is provided for the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities staff on request of the agency liaison. Upon successful completion of this workshop, 6 contact hours or 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be awarded.

 

 

Effective Interactions Through Communication for OMRDD

This workshop develops the skills necessary to effectively use behavior and communication while working with team members, managers, and others. The workshop focuses on the professional interactions between members at all levels of operations, from coworkers and supervisors, to the individuals served by the staff at OMRDD. Focus will be on addressing workplace pressures, promoting excellence in interpersonal relationships, and exploring how to establish a more positive work climate.

 

 

Electronic Data Processing (EDP) Auditing

This workshop reviews the process of collecting and evaluating evidence and electronic records to determine whether a computer system accurately maintains data integrity, safeguards assets, achieves organizational goals effectively, and consumes resources efficiently. The workshop topics include the following essential components of an EDP audit: physical and environmental, system administration, application software, network security, and business continuity reviews.

 

 

Facilitating and Leading Work Groups for DMV: Train the Trainer

This two-day workshop is designed for staff who facilitate and lead supervisor and management work teams so that they can in turn train other staff to develop skills for effective group facilitation. This includes preparing for group meetings, using problem-solving techniques and consensus-building processes, managing participants, and post-meeting follow up. Curriculum planning, use of instructional aides, evaluation techniques, principles of adult learning, and presentation skills will also be covered.

 

 

Facilitating Videoconference Meetings and Other Sessions for OMRDD

This half-day workshop discusses the challenges of facilitating videoconference meetings and other sessions with participants who are geographically dispersed. Participants will learn methods to encourage active participation, how to keep interactions productive in order to adhere to meeting objectives, and ways to assure that everyone has an equal voice.

 

 

Facilitation Skills for SEMO & OHS

This workshop develops skills for effective group facilitation to ensure successful meetings. Topics include preparing for group meetings, determining which problem-solving techniques and consensus processes to use, managing participants, and following-up after the meeting. The workshop includes discussion, exercises, and role plays.

 

 

Fraud and Forensic Accounting

This two-day workshop will discuss what a fraud is, how frauds can be committed, how frauds can be uncovered, and what accountants can do to avoid frauds occurring in their organizations. Topics include how to review operating procedures and basic documentation of individuals in the organization as they relate to fraud detection.

This two-day workshop will discuss what a fraud is, how frauds can be committed, how frauds can be uncovered, and what accountants can do to avoid frauds occurring in their organizations. Topics include how to review operating procedures and basic documentation of individuals in the organization as they relate to fraud detection.

 

 

Geographic Information Systems for DOT: Advanced

This two-day workshop explores building geo databases, geocoding, and geoprocessing through hands-on examples and case studies. Participants also learn advanced applications using ArcGIS such as data integration, design, and modeling. Prerequisite: Familiarity with basic GIS concepts and applications. This workshop is provided for Department of Transportation staff on request of the Agency Liaison.

 

 

How to Manage Risk of Sexually Offending Behavior by Persons with Developmental Disabilities for OMRDD

This workshop will introduce a risk assessment tool that utilizes a convergent approach called ARMIDLO-S. ARMIDLO-S combines an actuarial aproach with guided, clinical judgement, and is used to assess risk in persons with developmental disabilities. The primary components needed to manage re-offending risk effectively will be outlined. Common mistakes in risk management by teams will be presented and discussed.

 

 

Infection Control for OMRDD: Basic Concepts (Videoconference)

This half-day workshop is delivered through videoconferencing and is the second in a series of seven infection control workshops for the non-infection control nurse. This session will focus on basic infection control concepts including modes of transmission, transmission based precautions, personal protective equipment, and disposal of waste in non-hospital settings. Attendance at "Infection Control for OMRDD: Introduction" is recommended but not required. This workshop does not fulfill the mandated training requirement related to infection control needed for license renewal. Upon completion of this workshop, each participant will receive .3 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

 

 

Infection Control for OMRDD: Infectious Agents and Their Control, Part 1 (Videoconference)

This half-day workshop is delivered through videoconferencing and is the fifth in a series of seven infection control workshops for the non-infection control nurse. Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment (IDDT) for OMH

This four-day workshop is designed for identified psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, intensive case managers and rehabilitation staff at the Mt. Vernon Clinic and select healthcare staff from other Rockland Psychiatric Center clinics. This workshop will provide clinicians and counselors with an understanding of integrated dual diagnosis treatment including the core care principles and the IDDT Fidelity Scale. The workshop will cover how to conduct a five-step assessment and develop a treatment plan utilizing specific IDDT instruments and forms. Other workshop topics to be discussed include: matching interventions to a client's stage of treatment; Motivational Interviewing; and the application of cognitive and behavioral interventions to achieve and maintain recovery from substance abuse. This workshop is provided for the Office of Mental Health, Rockland Psychiatric Center staff on request of the agency liaison.

This two-day workshop provides an overview of the New York State budget process focusing on the primary forces at play in developing, negotiating, and adopting the budget. On Board Diagnostics Enforcement Training for DMV

This three-day workshop is designed to help motor vehicle investigators analyze data from On Board Diagnostic (OBD) tools for enforcement of the emissions program. Participants will be taught how to access data and determine fraudulent OBD testing in order to develop cases and present those cases before an administrative law judge in court. The workshop will include classroom discussion and hands on activities using vehicle scan tools and their various service modes.

 

 

Oracle 11g Database Administration I

This five-day course is designed to give you a firm foundation in basic database administration. In this class, you'll learn how to install and maintain an Oracle database. You will gain a conceptual understanding of the Oracle database architecture and how its components work and interact with one another. You will also learn how to create an operational database and properly manage the various structures in an effective and efficient manner including performance monitoring, database security, user management, and backup/recovery techniques. The lesson topics are reinforced with structured hands-on practices. This course is designed to prepare you for the corresponding Oracle Certified Associate exam.

 

 

Oracle 11g Intro to SQL

In this 5-day course, students learn the concepts of relational databases. This course provides the essential SQL skills that allow developers to write queries against single and multiple tables, manipulate data in tables, and create database objects. Students learn to control privileges at the object and system level. This course covers creating indexes and constraints, and altering existing schema objects. Students also learn how to create and query external tables. Students learn to use the advanced features of SQL in order to query and manipulate data within the database, use the dictionary views to retrieve metadata, and create reports about their schema objects. Students also learn some of the date-time functions available in the Oracle Database. This course discusses how to use the regular expression support in SQL.

 

 

Oracle 11g Program with PL/SQL

This 5-day course introduces students to PL/SQL and helps them understand the benefits of this powerful programming language. Students learn to create PL/SQL blocks of application code that can be shared by multiple forms, reports, and data management applications. Students learn to create anonymous PL/SQL blocks as well as stored procedures and functions. Students learn to develop, execute, and manage PL/SQL stored program units such as procedures, functions, packages, and database triggers. Students learn the basic functionality of how to debug functions and procedures using the SQL Developer Debugger. Students also learn to manage PL/SQL subprograms, triggers, declaring identifiers and trapping exceptions. Students are introduced to the utilization of some of the Oracle-supplied packages. This workshop will provide participants with information on the impact of both prescription and non-prescription medications on movement and function and how to use this knowledge to make appropriate rehabilitative treatment plans. Medications that are most likely to have an adverse or favorable effect on mobility or movement and client characteristics that increase the probability of an adverse drug event will be addressed. This two-day workshop is designed to help individuals who deliver presentations communicate their message with greater confidence, clarity, and success. Getting to know your audience will be presented in depth, including how to deal with difficult audiences, and methods used to engage audience involvement. Practical Physical Exercise and Movement Opportunities for Developmentally and Physically Disabled for OMRDD (Videoconference)

This workshop is delivered through videoconferencing and is designed for nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreational therapists and dieticians who work with developmentally and physically disabled individuals. The workshop will discuss the October 2008 US Department of Health and Human Services' Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans report, and its implications. Workshop participants will learn techniques and physical exercises that are practical and suited for the developmentally disabled individual. Methods that can be used to promote physical activity with this population and their caregivers will also be discussed. Respectful Interactions for OMRDD

This half-day workshop is for primary caregivers for individuals with disabilities that, while in their care, may exhibit behavior that is considered socially unacceptable, rude, hurtful, or put the individual or those around him or her in danger. The workshop will focus on how to help staff handle these behaviors in ways that promote respect, safety, growth, and their relationship with the individual. Utilizing small and large group interactive activities, staff will be introduced to the DETER method, a method which promotes depersonalizing, empathizing, tone, engaging, and referring.

 

 

Root Cause Analysis

This workshop provides an in-depth look at Root Cause Analysis. It provides a comprehensive review of the analytical and investigative processes used to determine causative factors, and the development and application of interventions/approaches that will eliminate and/or manage the factors necessary to prevent occurrences and reoccurrences. To facilitate system implementation, participants will have the opportunity to discuss issues of concern, and practice the components of the Root Cause Analysis process and promote problem resolution.

Sleep Positioning: Assessing Consumers with Multiple Disabilities for Optimal Sleep Positioning for OMRDD

This workshop is designed for physical and occupational therapists who work with individuals with multiple disabilities and discusses sleep positioning as a vital component to the overall 24-hour postural management and care for individuals with severe motor impairment. The workshop covers nighttime positioning, screening, intervention options, and evaluation. A hands-on practicum allowing participants to assess individuals for nighttime positioning needs, conduct a history, perform a mat exam and work with wedges is also included. Upon course approval from RESNA, 6 contact hours, or 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), will be awarded for successful completion of this course.

This workshop provides an overview of environmental policy in New York State as it relates to the purchase, sale, or leasing of real property. Participants will learn what triggers SEQRA, how to do a preliminary inspection, and complete an Environmental Assessment Form. This workshop is designed for parole officers and correctional institution staff whose tasks involve interaction with parolees and /or inmates who suffer from mental illness, including parolees with Axis II diagnoses. Participants learn how to identify possible mental health issues, when to make a referral for a mental health screening, and how to recognize symptoms of an adverse reaction to psychotropic medications.

 

 

Survey Research Tools: Design and Implementation

This two-day workshop addresses designing and administering mail, telephone, and in-person surveys to develop and evaluate programs, conduct assessments, measure attitudes, and support research. The workshop reviews instrument construction, sampling concepts, methods, sampling error, response rate, and follow-up techniques. Participants will have ample opportunity to apply the workshop material to workplace situations.

This workshop will cover the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and its impact on New York State employees. It will provide a review of key provisions of the act, including the scope of the term "issuer" (public companies whose stock is traded on an exchange, or "Over-The-Counter"); strengthening of audit committees; improper influence on audits; internal financial controls; code of ethics; Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) certification of disclosure; other disclosure enhancements, such as off-balance sheet transactions; substantive transactional provisions, such as forfeiture by an issuer's CEO and CFO of any bonuses, or incentive compensation; accurate, complete, and timely determination of materiality and disclosure obligations; fair representation of financial condition and results; high quality audit and review of public company financial statements; preventing conflict of interest; and proper retention of audit documents and records.

This workshop provides an entry-level overview of the structure, powers, and functioning of local governments and their interaction with the state. Topics include the constitutional nature of local governments, incorporation, and annexation. Participants will also review the importance of regional planning and the powers of local government.

 

 

Visual Impact Assessment for DOT

This two-day workshop covers the recent advances in Visual Impact Assessment (VIA) Methodology and its application in New York State. These developments in the field have taken place at a time of increasing VIA activity regarding power plant siting and transportation project work. Topics include: new regulatory projects in the state; review of the US Army Corps of Engineers Visual Resources Assessment Process (VRAP); advances in visibility assessment; computerized visual simulation techniques; and visual mitigation. Sequential progression through all steps of VIA analysis will be addressed. There will also be computer demonstrations involving visibility and visual simulation applications. This is an intermediate level workshop aimed at public professionals with some knowledge of VIA process, and will focus on current VIA issues and use of technology. Upon completion of this workshop, 1.2 Continuing Education Units (12 PDHs) will be awarded.

The different types and the advantages and disadvantages of wireless technologies will be explored, including security issues and concerns that most likely affect a wireless network. Writing Skills for Clinicians for OMH

This workshop will assist participants in developing an understanding of the many aspects of case documentation and record keeping by exploring best practices for recording therapeutic and service activities. Topics include common pitfalls and errors in client record keeping; deciding what to include and omit in documentation; writing treatment plans; recording treatment activities; and documentation of client outcomes. Standards for documentation set by the Joint Commission of health care organizations will be included.

 

 

XML for Website Management

This two-day, hands-on workshop will provide a strong understanding of XML and how to apply it in your web environment. Day One will focus on the basics needed to understand and apply XML using examples and exercises based on proven research and real world applications. Day Two will expand on these examples to develop skills in applying XML to specific web issues such as managing content and multiple output formats. Participants will be given exercises to do in the workplace, and will return in one week for Day Two with questions and issues around adapting XML in their unique work environment. A flash drive with all sample files and a training guide will be provided as part of this workshop. Familiarity with web development, HTML/XHTML, and the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), as well as basic programming or scripting knowledge is required.
